Information

This subspecies occurs in Ireland.  It was discovered by Williams in 1916. It may also be the subspecies that occurs on the Isle of Man, which was discovered by Chalmers-Hunt in 1970, although at present it has not been confirmed that this is the subspecies found there. I am not sure if this subspecies is found elsewhere or not.

Adult Images

The adults have an average wingspan of 42mm, but this can be variable. The male on the forewing underside, has a white area between the thorax and the orange patch is strongly tinted yellow.

The female hindwing upperside is strongly tinged with yellow. The female underside has green markings which are darker and more intense than in other subspecies of this species.

Pupae Images

The pupae starts of green and may turn brown, but the pupae staying green is rarer than the brown form. The caterpillar usually forms the pupae on the stems of its foodplant.
