The Garden Carpet (Xanthorhoe fluctuata) is a
moth of the family Geometridae. It is an abundant and
familiar species across its huge range which covers the
whole Palearctic region, the Near East and North Africa.
This is a common species throughout the British Isles, this moth shows a preference for suburban habitats, and is found in North East Scotland, and frequencies of up to 40% are found in urban parts of London In Northern Ireland this is a widespread moth and it is generally found in counties Antrim, Armagh, Down and Fermanagh. It is found on many sites along the coast and also on Rathlin Island. In upland areas there is usually one generation, but in other areas there is usually two generations that fly from 22nd April to around 23rd October. The species has an exceptionally long flying season spanning two or three broods, and the adults can be seen any time from April to October. It flies throughout the night and is attracted to light, sometimes in moderate numbers and this moth is one of the species most likely to be seen at lighted windows. Similar Species Silver-ground Carpet (Xanthorhoe montanata), Large Twin-spot Carpet (Xanthorhoe quadrifasiata), Red Carpet (Xanthorhoe decoloraria), Flame Carpet (Xanthorhoe designata).Known Aberrations To Be Completed Adult Images This moth has a wingspan of 27-31 mm. The wings are greyish-white with three irregular black blotches along the costa of the forewing, the largest in the middle. Occasionally, much darker (melanic) forms occur.
Mating Images None Caterpillar Images The caterpillar is grey or green with pale diamond-shaped markings along the back. It usually feeds on crucifers: both cultivated brassicas and wild species such as flixweed, garlic mustard, perennial wall-rocket, wallflower and wild radish. It has also been recorded feeding on nasturtium. Pupae Images This species overwinters as a pupa. Forms Pages
