Information

This is a very common species in much of Britain and Ireland, it can be found in good numbers between May and July visiting flowers, especially those of buttercup (Ranunculus). There can be many adult moths on one flower at once. I need information on its distribution in other places outside U.K.

Adult Images

The moths are tiny and are about 3 or 4mm long, so they can be easily overlooked, but when inspecting some flowers in May to July, they can be seen. If these moths are in the area, and there are ox eye daisy flowers in bloom in area, you, like I have, may see adults wiggling themselves in the flower head looking for nectar.

Cocksfoot Moth on Ground Elder

Information

Location: Mountstewart, Co Down, Northern Ireland.

As I recall, there was quite a few on these ground elder plants in the area I was in. These are quite small moths and can be seen in good numbers on plants sometimes. This was taken with my Samsung Digimax L85. Taken on 19/05/2007.

The caterpillars foodplant is mainly the cock's foot (Dactylis glomerata), (hence the common name of this moth) The tiny caterpillars feed on the seeds of the grass, later pupating in the stem.
