Information

Chrysoteuchia culmella is a species of moth of the family Crambidae. It is found in Europe and in the UK.  In the UK it is one of the commonest of the grass moths and even though its normal flight time is at night, when it can be attracted to light, it can be easily found by day in grassy areas when it is disturbed from where it is resting.

This moth is sometimes parasited by Eriothrix rufomaculata, a type of fly.

Flight Period

In Europe, the Chrysoteuchia culmella is found from May to August. In England, Scotland and Wales the Chrysoteuchia culmella is also found in June and July.

In Ireland, this moth is found from late May to July, but mostly from June to July. The earliest record in Ireland for this moth was 6th May in year 2000.

I don't yet have information on this moths flight period in Northern Ireland, but I assumed it was the same as in other areas of Ireland.

This table has information on the flight period of the Chrysoteuchia culmella. The flight period represents an area as a whole based on overall records of flight times. This may vary in areas within the locations mentioned.

The shaded cells in orange, indicate what months the moth is found as an adult. Half coloured cells indicate the first or second half of a month when the moth flies.

N Ireland is Northern Ireland and S Ireland is South of Ireland and W Ireland is West of Ireland (Any part of Ireland not included in Northern Ireland).

Adult Information

The adult moth has a wingspan of 18-24 mm.  It is a thinish, medium brown coloured moth and is easily distinguished from other grass moths with its one or two angled cross-lines and metallic golden fringe to the forewings.

By day it rests head-down on grass stalks, and is easily disturbed.

Information

Location: Mountstewart, Co Down, Northern Ireland.

This moth is a very common sight in grassy fields around Mountstewart, along with a few other similar species of moth. I have not found it easy to get any decent photo of this moth, but this has been the best I got in 2007. This is its typical resting pose, on a grass stalk. This was taken with my Samsung Digimax L85 in July 2007. I don't have an exact date this was taken on.

Information

Location: Anne's  Point, Strangford Lough, Co Down, Northern Ireland.

This moth is a very common sight where I found this one. I must have found over 80 in a few hundred yards of grass. I went to a place called Anne's Pint which is a National Trust winter birding ground for seabirds that overwinter there.  This was taken with my Canon 400D and Sigma 105mm on 26/06/2009.
