Welcome to Dave McCormick's Moth and Butterfly World. Here is information on the Buff-Tip (Phalera bucephala). Hear Scientific NameGo Back to Notodontidae Page Go to Thumbnail Species Index Information
The Buff-Tip is a very distinctive species. Its common
name derives from the forewing markings that camouflages
the moth when it rests. This moth is widespread in
Europe and eastwards to Siberia. The species is widely
distributed throughout Britain, and quite common,
especially in the southern half of England.
Similar Species Need InformationKnown Aberrations To Be Completed Adult Images This is a fairly large, heavy bodied species with a wingspan of 55-68 mm. The forewings are grey with a large prominent buff patch at the apex. As the thoracic hair is also buff, the moth looks remarkably like a broken twig at rest. The hindwings are creamy-white. This moth flies at night in June and July.
The young caterpillars are gregarious, becoming solitary
later. The older caterpillars are very striking, black with
white and yellow lines. It feeds on many trees and shrubs.
