Hear Scientific NameGo Back to Oecophorinae Page Go to Thumbnail Species Index Information The Brown House-moth (Hofmannophila pseudospretella) is a species of moth of the family Oecophoridae. It is endemic to Asia and is an introduced species in Europe and its found throughout the UK and was introduced to these places and many other parts of the world in the 1840s.
This is a common inhabitant inside houses, this species is found often on indoor walls as it begins to go dark.
Flight Period
The Brown House Moth can be found at anytime of the year as it inhabits houses and they are usually warm enough to let them live and breed there at any time of the year. In the wild, the most recorded time to find these moths are in July/August but they can be found usually from March to November and sometimes in January. This table has information on the flight period of the Brimstone Moth. The flight period represents an area as a whole based on overall records of flight times. This may vary in areas within the locations mentioned. The shaded cells in orange, indicate what months the moth is found as an adult. Half coloured cells indicate the first or second half of a month when the moth flies. N Ireland is Northern Ireland and S Ireland is South of Ireland and W Ireland is West of Ireland (Any part of Ireland not included in Northern Ireland).
Similar Species White Shouldered House Moth (Endrosis sarcitrella).Known Aberrations To Be Completed Adult Information The wingspan of this moth is 16-26 mm. The general appearance is fairly constant but the species does show a large size variation.
Mating Images None Caterpillar Information The Caterpillar is small and grub like and feeds on organic detritus, e.g. insect frass, wool, fur, skin, seeds, dead insects, nest debris and dried plants etc...
