Information

Black Rustic (Aporophyla nigra) is a moth of the family Noctuidae. The species can be found in Europe and the UK. In the UK it is common and well distributed, except for eastern England, East Anglia, parts of the Midlands and north-east England where it is local, but increasing its range. This moth breeds on the Orkney Islands and is possibly only a vagrant in Shetland. It is also widespread on the Isle of Man, Ireland and the Channel Islands.

In Northern Ireland it is scarce, being most frequently found mostly in Armagh, Down and Fermanagh. It is mainly found on the coast of Down including Ballykinler Dunes, Murlough NNR, Rostrevor Wood and Seaforde. In Londonderry the only known site for this moth is the Umbra and in Antrim it is almost as rare, only occurring on Rathlin Island and Magheramorne. In Tyrone it is found at Crilly, Favour Royal and Rehaghy Mountain. In Fermanagh it is commonly recorded at Crom and Garvary Wood.

Its habitats are open healthland, moorland, calcareous grassland, roadside verges, woodland rides and even gardens. The flight period is usually from September to October in one generation.

Flight Period

The Black Rustic fly from September to October in Britain, Wales and Scotland.

In Ireland the flight period is from end of August to end of November with peak of the records being in October. In North Donegal the peak period for finding this moth has been in September. In South Waterford the peak period has been in October as with East Wicklow, but not as many are found in October as in South Waterford.

In Northern Ireland the Black Rustic is found from around the 25th August to 9th November.

This table has information on the flight period of the Black Rustic. The flight period represents an area as a whole based on overall records of flight times. This may vary in areas within the locations mentioned.

The shaded cells in orange, indicate what months the moth is found as an adult. Half coloured cells indicate the first or second half of a month when the moth flies.

N Ireland is Northern Ireland and S Ireland is South of Ireland and W Ireland is West of Ireland (Any part of Ireland not included in Northern Ireland).

Adult Images

The wingspan is 40-46 mm. This moth is a rather long-winged species, with little variation from the blackish-brown ground colour and whitish stigmata. The males have white hindwings, the females more dusky. The wings have a glossy look, only on fresh specimens. The antennae on both sexes is not visibly feathered.

The adults come to light and sugar and they feed on ivy and over ripe blackberries.

BLack Rustic on Tree

Information

Location: Mountstewart, Co Down, Northern Ireland.

I had a 6w heath trap out in an area with trees, beside a small meadow area and 4 of these came to the trap. I knew what it was when I saw it as there are not very many black moths around. Taken with my Canon 500D and Sigma 105mm Macro Lens. Taken on 27/09/2009.
