Welcome to Dave McCormick's Moth and Butterfly World. Here is information on the Superfamily, Pieridae and its subfamilies. Go Back to A-Z Family index and Photos Information This is a large family of over 1000 species of butterfly. Many are either white, yellow or have orange tipped wings. These are known as whites, yellows or sulphurs and orange tip butterflies. Pigments from the butterflies waste products give these butterflies their colours. The sexes usually look similar but can differ, often in their wing pattern, colour or number of the markings on the wings. The name "butterfly" came from a member of this group of butterflies, the brimstone (Goneptryx Rhamni) as it was known to early British naturalists as the butter coloured fly. Caterpillars of this group tend usually to be gregarious and sometimes can be agricultural pests as many eat cabbage, pea and other plants like that. Subfamilies in this Superfamily Dismorphiinae, Pseudopontiinae, Pierinae, Coliadinae List of Species We Have Photos and Information On
