Important Notes About This Website

Hello and welcome. First, before I say anymore, I want to say that I have spent most of this year doing a complete overhaul of this website from its looks to its features so it can be more pleasant to look at, easier to navigate, pack with more information from reliable sources, species maps on all species I have written about on the site and so much more. This has taken a very long time to complete as its such a large task.

(to check when I last posted an update here about the progress of the new site, see below)

Information on updates to new site

Currently I have 490 pages and 1,170 images and 95 sound files that when you click, use a computer generated voice to sound out scientific names of species as best I could get them to sound. All on the new site, which is a lot!

11th October 2011: Sorry for no updates in  very long time, I really had hoped to do updates before now explaining what was happening. First I have moved house and this still means "this site is not dead, just bear with me as I am working on getting pages done all the time, when I can.", I have been working on the website so getting there, little by little. Hopefully I will have the hardest section I am working on, done in a few weeks. Then I can start adding species pages which will be fun and interesting to do.

My YouTube Nature Videos

I have been working on, a large project called "Dave's Rambles Through Nature" which is a series of videos (1080p HD) on youtube that will be about the nature I find in my travels in Northern Ireland. There is two series I am working on, a main series which the first series will be about habitats in Northern Ireland such as forests, wetlands, costal sites, meadows, bogs etc... and each video will be up to an hour long and take a very long time to film (working on these for 3 years now and still no where near done) so each video will be done when I have all footage for them.

The other series is called "Dave's Rambles Through Nature Shorts" and these will be up to 15 minutes long max. I already have two done you can watch below and these videos are anything to do with nature such as, what nature to see that month, how to help wildlife in your garden, how to grow wildflowers or trees to benefit wildlife or anything news worthy to do with nature. These videos will be done and uploaded as soon as I have footage and edited it, which is usually only a day or two after filming it there and then.

All videos are in full 1080p HD. The video are filmed with Canon 600D (1080p HD) and JVC Everio GZ-HM301BEK HD (720p HD), Horizon HD video camera and some with Canon 500D.

Here is a link to my new youtube channel: http://www.youtube.com/user/DynamixWarePro and here is the first three episodes of my new video series "Dave's Rambles Through Nature Shorts", please comment on the videos via the videos themselves (direct link above the videos to see comments) I'll try and do one or two videos per week. Tell anyone who you think might like these videos and if you can, subscribe to see more in future! (The first video explains everything about the videos):

FAQ Video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HD7wTAlbUQ8

Episode 1: Leaf Mines: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hIGJI2DYtwQ

Episode 2: Autumn 2011: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6PDBgBBIXBs

All music besides a few pieces of music, I make myself and much of it is old traditional Irish music that fits in with the video or my own compositions. I'll be adding the videos to my website too so you can see them, and comment on them on youtube.

Here is a look at the new site.

Home Page: 1

Family Pages: 1,2

A sample of species pages: 1,2,3,4

The site background may change before final, but this is how the new site will look and won't be changed at all. Its far more friendly on the eyes and easy to edit. I am including a form so that people can send me information and an image (if they have an image) to identify a moth, butterfly or caterpillar.

Website works on 800x600 resolution but 1024x768 is best to view it. Does work on widescreen. Tested on Internet Explorer 8, 9 and 9 64-bit version. Also tested on google chrome version 11.0.069.71 and no problems. Does not work well on Internet Explorer 9 Beta.

Hopefully this website now won't take too long to complete. I have all the information and just have to transfer it to new pages, this will be the longest part to do.

I'll try and keep you updated more often than I was. Below is information on the old design I was working on.

Images of the new site

Here are some preview images of the new site. If the design of a page changes, I will repost new images.

The new site displays well on Google Chrome, Internet explorer (up to current IE9 Beta) and has a slight difference in Mozilla Firefox (some text appears centred when its not supposed to, but its not really noticeable and is fine)

Here is a quick look at some of the new pages (not 100% final as some pages have changed ever so slightly since I created those pages:)

Home Page (Note, before this look is final, I have to test the website using different screen resolutions as I use a 21 inch widescreen on my PC with a 1600x900): 1,2,3 (Click number to see image).

On left is links to guides on how to use the website and links on any news about moths or butterflies or related articles. On right is information on the websites statistics with the latest 3 page updates linked here for quick access, and below my diary of what moths and butterflies I see when I am out and about. The image of the moth you see in the 2 image is going to be "my favourite find of the month since last update"

Here is some images of the new species pages: 1,2,3,4,5,6 (click number to see image. This was of the red-Green Carpet moth page, all species pages have the same layout)

I had issues with the current look of the site and with no CSS, couldn't do design changes easily, but not anymore. I added CSS so I can easily implement design changes to hundreds of pages at once.

Differences using different browsers (Note there isn't many differences, just a few display differences as you will notice, don't make much difference to the look and feel of the website. Anything I didn't show just means they all work fine on each browser I tested.) All images on Firefox and I think Google Chrome, appear a little more vibrant than they actually are.

Internet Explorer 9 Beta: 1,2,3

Google Chrome: 1,2,3

Mozilla Firefox: (Note the links on the family pages appear centred and horizontal lines on all pages appear thicker on this browser) 1,2,3

More soon as I do more updates. Don't worry, check this site as is for now and then see a better website in future. You won't see any updates to the current site except information on the new sites progress.

Its been quite a year for me and this website and I am continually adding, removing and updating things on this site to keep all information on it accurate and give you a fuller picture of the world of butterflies and moths, using many references like books, websites and experienced people who know about this subject.

At the end of the year I'll be posting my moth records for this year on here. All my sightings on moths over the whole of 2009, some from 2008 and 2007 will also be on here for you all to see.

If you want to know how some images are displayed as well as youtube videos on links below on this page, these pages use highslide JS for loading images/information so you don't have to go to another page to view information on an image. See: http://highslide.com/ for what I am using.

I am currently working on a complete overhaul of this website with a new layout that uses CSS, so it will be a lot easier to update the website and keep it updated and looking much better than it is now

What is this website? Posted: 07-Dec-09

This website started as a site to hold information on the species of butterflies and moths I came about on my travels. I have seen too many sites that focused on one group like "Butterflies of the UK" or "Moths of Belgium", but I wanted to create a site that covers the whole world of butterflies and moths, and everything about them. Its a huge undertaking and takes hours of work, but its worth it.

I Launched this site at 11:59pm 31st June 2007 GMT and since then this site has gone through major changes and from a few pages that looked bad to over 540 much better designed pages. Now it holds as much information on butterflies and moths as I can find, from information on species of butterflies and moths that I have taken photos of in past, right through to information on all families of butterflies and moths and more.

If you have a passion about butterflies and moths and want to find out anything about them, please keep visiting as this site is updated daily and will probably keep on being updated in future as this is a never ending project to create an encyclopaedia into the world of butterflies and moths, which I could not do without the help of so many people like James McCormick, Pete Eeles, Guy Padfield, Mike Wall, the Butterfly Conservation Northern Ireland branch, Angus Tyner, Adrian Hoskins, Gary and Lisa Richardson, Piers Vigus and all the others I got help or inspiration from, I cannot possibly thank you all and finally, thank you to those who take an interest in our natural world ad do all they can to protect it.

The future is not in a few months, or even years, its now, and if we act properly, our children and grandchildren will have a greater future to look forward to, with a greener, cleaner world.

Weekly Reports Posted: 07-Dec-09

Like everyone passionate about butterflies and moths, I am looking for them all the time. I have created a month by month report on what I see and its updated daily. In Winter when not many (or any) butterflies are around, I am still looking, but its for moths. To get started, click the image below to see a list of all month by moth accounts I have created for you to see. (Next year for 2010, you just click the month on this image to go to that month, but since its still 2009, I decided not to implement this yet)

My New Book Posted: 11-Nov-09
 Book Section Page

Moth Book Page 1

I am currently writing two books. First is about butterflies and second is about moths. I started in 2006 and have been writing them since, but I have still a long way to go before completion of both books. As people may know it takes a long time to write a book, more so when its about wildlife.

I am writing these so that everyone can understand them, from novices to experts. To find out more about these books, Click here to see images of the book and what it is all about.

Land of the Lost Volcano Posted: 16-Sept-09

Display Land of the Lost Volcano - Moths on Sheet Video

This series is about the ecosystem of New Guinea. A team of scientists from different parts of the world have came together along with wildlife experts, photographers and cave explorers to explore a giant extinct volcano - Mount Bosavi in new Guinea.

Click the link left to see a video of "Land of the Lost Volcano." (You will see a white square until video appears) Press the X in the right corner of the popup to close it.

When I first saw this show I was amazed by some of the creatures they found. They found two caterpillars and not knowing what they were, they took them back to their camp, the photographer, she put up a time lapse camera and after the caterpillars pupated, she left the camera focused on the pupae and got a video of the moths emerging. These moths looked pretty fascinating and one of the men, said that if they were a new species, he would name them after his wife because it was her birthday and could not be there to celebrate it with her.

They showed what it was like 10 years before in that area of jungle and what it looks like now, using geographic maps of the area, and now there are lots of areas that are roads going through the jungle, which before was covered in trees and plants. If things like this keep going there will be no jungle left! Its sad and something needs to be done to stop the loss of this jungle and many more like it.

Painted Lady Influx Posted: 31-May-09

Display Painted Lady Migration Video
There is something happening in Europe and is being seen in Britain.  What is it? Well, if you know the image above, you'll guess its something to do with the Painted Lady (Vanessa cardui) butterfly.

Click the link left to see a video I made on the Painted Lady migration (You will see a white square until video appears) Press the X in the right corner of the popup to close it.

People are predicting a warmer summer in Britain than usual. And why? Butterflies can detect even the slightest change in the weather. This being so, they know when its going to be hot and when it gets colder. People across Europe have been recording good numbers of Pained Lady butterflies migrating. Where are they going? The UK.

Now this is exceptional, because its rare to find so many reach Britain in the numbers being reported. It must mean its going to get warmer, and warmer than it has been for quite a number of years. Read the report on UK Butterflies forum here: http://www.ukbutterflies.co.uk/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?f=8&t=3080 for more.

Page on Painted Lady coming soon. Loads of sightings here in the past two days on 30th-31st. I'll be adding this page, along with many new species to this site, after the updates to this site are done.

Amazon in Trouble: Bruce Parry's Amazon Posted: 31-May-09

Display Bruce Parry's Amazon Video
Worldwide, 50,000 square miles of rainforest is deforested every year. This accounts for 20% of global carbon emissions in the earths atmosphere. Rainforests only make up 2% of the worlds surface, but they hold over 50% of the worlds species like the Amazon as in a 5 mile area of its rainforest, over 1,500 species of flowering plant, 750 species of tree and over 500 species of butterfly and more can be found. Do we really want that destroyed?

Click the link left to see a video of Bruce Parry's Amazon (You will see a white square until video appears) Press the X in the right corner of the popup to close it.

The Amazon is in trouble. Its one of the most important places on earth because of its wildlife and how the trees in the South American rainforest produce around 20% of the worlds oxygen.

If the deforestation continues and pollution keeps happing, the world will warm up at a faster and faster rate. Here is a preview of the BBC show, Bruce Parry's Amazon which really opened my eyes to what is going on in South America:
